Kate, clearly concerned for the child’s safety, stepped toward Ryan, or The Doll or The Eye or Boy, or whatever his name was, and Julie’s ears started to ring with fear while her heart tried to climb out of her chest. “Bites?” Kate said, “They bite you?”
“Only sometimes!’ Ryan grinned with his mouth, but his eyes stayed dull and unseeing, “Come on!” Ryan turned and ran out of sight into the dark hall.
Kate didn’t hesitate at all and grabbed Julie’s hand, chasing behind Ryan, just catching glimpses of him ahead, as he called to them “Come on!” and led them down the dark halls of the building.
“Kate! What are you doing?!” Julie was terrified, her eyes were watering, and she felt like she had to pee. Behind them, she could hear doors opening and closing, cutting off the path they were taking.
“He needs our help, Julie! We can’t just leave him here!” Kate was right – but Julie didn’t know how they could possibly help him, or what they were going to face.
Ryan took several quick and unexpected turns, until, finally, Julie and Kate saw him slip into a dimly lit room. Julie stopped dead in her tracks and jerked her hand away from Kate. “I can’t go in there!” Kate gave her a pleading look, but understood. “Wait here, I’ll be right back.” Julie hugged herself tightly and watched Kate walk slowly into the room and disappear from view…
A blood curdling scream tore through the hall where Julie waited, followed by loud cackles of laughter and shouts coming from the room where Kate and Ryan had gone, and Julie, despite her fear, threw herself into the room to see what had become of her friend and was hit with a splash of ice cold water in her face, which made her gasp and yelp loudly.
She opened her eyes and saw Kate, soaking wet and bent over with laughter, with Ryan standing next to her. A small group of people from their neighborhood were all standing around them laughing and horsing around.
“W-w-what just happened?” Julie was frightened and confused, her heart was still racing from the adrenaline. Ryan walked over and handed her a wad of paper towels and said “It’s a trick! Happy Halloween!”
Kate came over and hugged her, “Are you okay, Julie? It’s all a part of the haunted house! Wasn’t it great? Ryan lives here! His parents do this every year!”
“I was scared to death!” Julie couldn’t believe how frightened she had been, she through she was going to wet her pants at one point, and she finally started to laugh while Kate walked her over to the table of treats, Julie sighed and surveyed the bowls of candy and the stacks of cupcakes and cookies.
Kate grabbed a cupcake that looked like a spider, took a huge bite, and said, through a mouth of frosting,”Best. Halloween. Ever.”
THE END
“It’s a trick! Happy Halloween!” I think my response would be “Oh, I’ll show you a trick all right!”
Plus, if I got hit with ice cold water, I would wet my pants. Nice ending!
Phew! I was afraid that Ryan was going to become one of those horror film children that suddenly lunges at your with red eyes and fangs.
Aw, this ending made me smile! I love it!
Ack, poor Julie! Maybe in the next CYOB, she can pants Kate. It’s only fair.
Aww, yay. A happy ending! Still, I would kick Kate’s ass if she did that to me.
