Moving Update.

Well, we moved all of the big furniture over the weekend and now it’s just getting all the odds and ends and technology from the old place into the new place.

The kitchen was painted (mostly by Martin, Lisa, & Doug) as well.

I am exhausted. But I’m at work.

Annika wrote this post about “going home” for the holidays and that combined with moving reminded me of how my aunt Sue asked someone about some pictures of a house they were showing at a family gathering once – she asked, “Is that your home?”

I don’t think that I had ever heard anyone else ask that question that way – always heard it as “new house.”

“Home” sure means a lot more.

I realized as I was writing it that this is only tangentially related to your post, sorry.

I read a pretty interesting post on Language Log about different understandings of the word ‘home’. It was sparked by an article that said “When I told the delivery dispatcher my address, she asked, ‘Is that an apartment or a home?’”

It’d weird how people (the real estate market?) have reinterpreted the word ‘home’ to mean ‘a house that you own’, as evidenced in the phrase ‘home-owner’. I mean, I own the place I live in, but it’s a condo, so do I get to call myself a ‘home-owner’? When I lived in an apartment, it was still my home.

Oh, baby. Your Grammy Fou Fou said your home is where your clothes are. So, baby, you are home! I want to come see your home! Love,
    Mom

“Home” does have a nice ring to it. I hope you have many happy years in yours.
