Doing 80 in 2nd Gear.

I swore that I would never write this post. That I would never be one of those people that moves to a new place and complains about the people that live in the new place. But here I am.

California drivers are, by far, the worst that I have ever encountered.

I could list all the reasons why but I will leave you with a warning: If you come here and need to drive, make sure that you always wear your safety belt, that your car has the maximum number of airbags allowable, and that you don’t have freeway driving anxiety because you will die of a heart attack.

From what I’ve been told, in dealing with life long Californians anyway, is that Californians “just drive fast.” If speeding was the only issue, things would be peachy!

I’m sure matters are not helped by the state, counties, and municipalities that refuse to put up decent signage anywhere.

The moral of the story: Driving here is the worst and I don’t’ want to do it anymore.

And I haven’t been in an accident or anything.

  • I am trying to figure out a way to safely drive with my eyes closed. I don’t want to drive dangerously myself, I just don’t want to see everyone else’s driving.

  • See, I am from, California, and the Ontario, Canada drivers scare me to DEATH!!

  • You need to come to New York for a bit. Drivers are bad everywhere.

  • New Mexico is worse. (Highest per-capita incidence of drunk driving, for one thing.)

  • When I visited HiCal, I remarked that people drove like they didn’t expect anyone else would be on the roads.

  • Come to Michigan and drive during the first snowfall…you’d think the drivers here had never laid eyes on the white stuff.

I’ll take your word for it. Not that I could handle anywhere in the US. I was so freaked by driving on the opposite side of the road in Florida that I let my husband drive everywhere, even though the traffic was fine. (I never do that. That’s how freaked out I was.)

I have read a claim that Brazil has the worst drivers. Having seen the way they drive in Rome and the Middle East, I DREAD TO THINK WHAT THIS IS LIKE.

England has its fair share of silly buggers, but it’s pretty OK by comparison. Phew.

  • It’s funny you say that, because I desperately miss driving in California, as compared to driving in upstate New York. These people are retarded, and talk about a lack of decent — or in many cases, ANY — signage. (I’m honestly baffled by your view on the lack of decent signage in California… I PINE for SoCal signage (O.C. and San Diego at least… the only thing I associate with L.A. is traffic, and I’ve only been to Palm Springs once).

I’ve long been intending to write a blog post about all that is wrong with driving here.

I guess it largely comes down to what you’re used to.

And also, that (many) drivers everywhere suck. Because (many) people everywhere are fucking stupid, selfish, and inconsiderate. Did I mention stupid?
